Dangerous Goods transports, short form how-to
Shipper and consignor are responsible for that dangerous goods are possible to transport and may be transported by methods of transport what are to be complied with on route.
Dangerous goods need to be correctly classified, until they may be packed, marked and labelled correctly and by the regulations. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a good document for checking those details.
For labelling are needed correct transport labels, whose size. material and colours are regulated.
Transport regulations vary by methods of transport. Check routing from your forwarding or logistics company to be sure what regulations are used on their routes.
Multimodal transport from/to Finland mostly is a combination of both road and sea transport, so regulations to comply with are ADR and IMDG.
For air transports IATA-DGR is to be complied with.
Documentation required by ADR contains international CMR-waybill or similar, with classification details. It needs by ADR to show dangerous goods classification by certain sequence, containing UN-number, Proper Shipping Name, label number, packing group where assigned and tunnel restriction code. More specific details are given in ADR-chapter 5.4.
Documentation required by IMDG contains Dangerous Goods Declaration, DGD, or similar, with classification details. It needs to show more dangerous goods classification details compared to ADR but also them, though not tunnel restriction code. Also by IMDG the sequence how details are shown, is regulated. Shipper’s declaration is needed to be given and undersigned by person giving the information on DGD.
For air transports any person giving Dangerous Goods declaration about dangerous goods needs to be IATA-DGR approved by participating and fulfilling training requirements and passing training and examination.
Carrier and forwarder may trust on dangerous goods classification details given by shipper and that shipment is packed, labelled and marked accordingly and correct details are then given by appropriate documents, in correct format. Package needs to be attached and secured correctly and firmly to cargo transport unit structures during the transport.
As shipper you need to be aware of dangerous goods regulations what you need to comply with. Take care and nominate and get trained Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser for your company when that is needed.
